Microphones: Hiding Lavs and TX The art of micing talent: minimize clothing rustle, hide the mic & the transmitter Where to hide the mic: hat, hair, under clothes, pen? Different clothes, different techniques (button, t-shirts/sweaters, skin etc.) Where to hide the transmitter: pocket, belt, bra, leg Two kinds of rustle- across the mic capsule or noisy fabrics?
Microphones: Hiding Lavs and TX Pre-production: Discuss wardrobe and hair. Fabric choice, style (button down or t-shirt, skin tight or loose) Mic Placement: head/hair, sternum 6”-8” from mouth. Collar last choice. Does it matter what direction the mic capsule is pointed? TX: under least amount of clothing as possible. Hopefully not touching skin. Secure. Deal with clothing rustle.
Microphones: Lavs & Wireless Lavs should be thought of as BACKUP microphones. Always try to get a good position with the shotgun/boom first.
Lavs and Wireless – setting up • Test the equipment (new batteries) • Find out when it’s appropriate to mic the talent • Introduce yourself and explain what you’re doing • Mic them up! • Attach the TX and ask for a level check It’s so tiny! (but that’s a good thing when it comes to lavaliers) It’s also expensive!
Today’s exercise Crew (4): Same as last week? mixer, assistant, 2 actors Gear: Wireless, FP33 (mixer), 702T (recorder) Hide: mic and TX on actors Record: One good example (clean sound, no mic or TX seen) One bad example (rustle and/or lav/TX visible) Alan or I check it out, then switch roles.
