Air pollution by ozone in Europe • in summer 2005 • Preliminary results • Libor Cernikovsky • 10th EIONET Workshop • on Air Quality Management and Assessment • Vilnius, 17-18 October, 2005 European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change
Legislation • Under Directive 2002/3/EC MS shall provide: • monthly data: before the end of the following month information on the exceedance of information and alert thresholds (1h max > 180 & 240 µg/m3) • April – September data: not later than 31st October information on the exceedances of long-term objective for the protection of human health (8h day-max > 120 µg/m3) and 1h monthly maximums for all stations European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change
Related information • reporting forms, guidelines documents and other information available on the ETC/ACC web pagehttp://air-climate.eionet.eu.int/databases/o3excess • and EEA web pagehttp://eea.eu.int European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change
Monthly summary information • published on the ETC/ACC web page European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change

Preliminary results • based on data received before 3rd October • incomplete August data • no September data • in comparison with summer 2004 and previous summers European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change

Number of days: information threshold • Number of days on which at least one exceedance of the threshold value • observed per country and per month – information threshold 2004 2005 European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change

Average number of exceedance per station in regions • North-western Europe: UK, IE, NL, BE, LU , FR north of latitude 45° • Central and eastern Europe: DE, PL, CZ, SK, HU, AT, CH • Southern Europe: south of latitude 45 °, PT, ES, IT, SI, GR, CY, MT • Northern Europe: has not been included because of the low number of exceedances. Summer report • tight deadlines:... 31st October for data delivery... 23rd November delivery to to EEA • impossible to process late delivered data ! • provisional non-validated data used European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change
Remarks on data • All values are to be expressed in µg/m3. The volume must be standardised at the following conditions of temperature and pressure: 293 K and 101,3 kPa • The time is to be specified in Central European Time. • Do not forget to make the data available to public view on CDR. Summer reports • available on EEA web page http://reports.eea.eu.int/search_results?SearchTitle=ozone European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change
Summer 2004 report – mistake ! • Map 3.1 • Number of days with exceedance of the information threshold • Corrected EEA Technical report No 3/2005 is available on EEA web page. European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change
Discussion • Measured value of 180 and 240 µg/m3. is not the threshold exceedance... European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change
