History of MPAA On November 1, 1968 the MPAA made the first rating system. • G – For all ages. No parental guidance required. • M – Parental guidance is suggested, but all ages are admitted. • R – Anyone under 17 must be accompanied by an adult. • X – No one under 17 can be admitted.
Cont. After making the ratings the board found similarities in the R rating and the M rating. So they changed the M to PG. Then in 1984 they split up PG into two separate ratings PG and PG-13.
“Rating Judges” The rating of the movies is all done in Los Angeles, California. There are 10 to 13 members that decide the ratings. They work for the CRA (Classification and Rating Administration). The board of judges have to be mature and have to be a parent. In order to give a rating, they watch the movie. After that they discuss a fair rating for the movie.
Rated G movie contains no mild violence, no sexual content, and/or fowl language. There is no need for parental guidance For instance: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Rated PG-13 PG-13 rating came into effect in 1984.
A R-rated movie may include adult themes, adult activity, offensive language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements not suited for children.
Rated X The X rating is now known as the NC-17 rating
