  6. Agricultural commodity roundtables

  7. Objectives of the review study • Give us a sense of where are MSIs going • Better identify the strengths and limitations of MSIs • Stimulate discussion on what are the impacts of MSIs on the ground • Inform, adapt WWF’s strategy on MSIs Are MSIs measurably and permanently shifting markets towards improved economic, environmental and social outcomes?

  8. Conclusion 1. MSIs are one important and effective tool • MSIs are definitely part of the solution for multi-issue, multi-country and multi-stakeholder commodities/sectors. They are an important tool in the toolbox • Key benefit is the multi-stakeholder nature of MSIs: brings credibility, accountability and transparency in the supply chain. • MSIs are solutions-oriented and their outputs are more likely to work as all key actors of the supply chain are engaged • MSIs full an important gap in the governance of natural resource use

  9. Benefits/strengths of MSIs

  10. Weaknesses/constraints of MSIs

  11. Conclusion 2. Impacts are found but data is lacking • Economic, environmental and social impacts are recorded. • There is a general feeling that MSIs are more effective on environmental than on social issues. • In general improvements are mostly assumed as standards include requirements, but research – and thus evidence - is still limited. For some commodities it is still too early to find impacts. • Today, difficult to substantiate arguments supporting or criticizing MSIs with evidence-based research • Building such impacts assessment systems should be a priority of all MSIs and all stakeholders

  12. Conclusion 3. Supply chain/market understanding is key Sophisticated market understanding required for MSIs to effectively transform markets • What is the market and how is it structured and organised? • What are the products? • Who is supplying? • Who is consuming? • Who is driving demand? • What are the incentives and disincentives to change market players’ behaviours?

  13. Conclusion 4. Improvements to MSIs are needed • Many MSIs are at a critical juncture: they must move from their role of standard development body to standard implementation agency that more effectively address market demands. • Serious capacity and financial constraints at Secretariat level • Improvement in governance: decision-making processes and reporting systems (including complaints mechanisms and dispute resolution) • Technical assistance and lessons learning within and between MSIs => How to best magnify the speed and uptake of MSIs?
