Characterization Characterization-the relation of a characters’ personalities. Types Direct Characterization- the writer tells the reader what the character is like. Indirect Characterization- character’s traits are revealed through their thoughts, actions, and words, and by what other characters say to or about them.
Examples of Characterizations Direct Characterization Examples- • The grumpy girl doesn’t like her calm mom. • The rude boy is sitting by the nice teacher. Indirect Characterization Examples- • The man is in jail for many horrible crimes. • The boy got caught after stealing money from his mom’s purse three times.
Character’s Motivations Character’s Motivations- their reasons for acting as they do-may come from internal sources, such as feelings of loneliness, or external sources, such as danger.
Examples of Character’s Motivations Character’s Motivation Examples- • The kids were daring the small kid to jump off the bridge. The boy did and as a result he got hurt. • The mom was yelling at the girl to get her grades up the next test the girl toke she got an “A”.
