Why Students Hate Reading: Why Students Hate Reading/How To Make It Bearable • You are forced to do it in school. • Reading books is not a over in a short amount of time. • You are assigned books to read! Research has shown that people between the ages of 13 to 19 independently read less than any other age group. DO NOT: How to make it bearable: It is in your best interest to read. THE ONLY WAY TO BECOME A BETTER READER IS TO READ! Find something you like to read!!!!!!!! • Select a book because it has an attractive cover • or • Select a book because it doesn’t have many pages

According to Dictionary.com, a genre is a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique, or the like. • Characteristics a work (book ) has in common with other works. • The characteristics are broad based • Some genres are similar to others • Books can be classified by more than one genre!

Classics Types of Genres • According to Dictionary.com, classics are ofthefirstor highest quality,class,orrank • THEY ARE ELITE!!!!!!!! • Pertain to a historic period, era, or provides commentary about society • Have been read by people for centuries • Are considered the best works of literature Considered by many as the greatest book ever written, War and Peace is a typical example of a classic.

Science Fiction Types of Genres Cont… According to Dictionary.com, Science Fiction is a form of fictionthatdrawsimaginatively on scientific knowledge andspeculation in its plot, setting, theme, etc. • Often dealing with imaginative themes (other worlds, aliens, etc…) • Normally futuristic or not occurring in the present time • Technology is advanced and beyond our own Catching Fire, the second book in the Hunger Games series, is an example of popular Science Fiction.

Historic Fiction Types of Genres Cont…. • A genre that accurately portrays an event in the past,but specific characters and situations are fictitious. • The stories background is historically accurate and pertains to a significant event. • ex. Civil War, Great Depression, • etc… • Main characters and events that specifically happen to them are not actual occurrences. The best selling novel, Alaska is an example of Historic Fiction.

Fantasy Types of Genres Cont… • According to Dictionary.com, Fantasy isanimaginative or fanciful work, especially onedealing with supernaturalorunnaturaleventsorcharacters • BROADER DEFINITION THAN SCIENCE FICTION!!!!! • Alternative worlds and places • Characters can be human-like beings (dwarves, elves, etc…) • Some characters possess great mystical powers • Often involves mythological characters The Hobbit is a classic example of a Fantasy book

Books specifically written for teenagers! • Usually deals with a teenage issues or coming of age stories • Sometimes written in the first person, from the main character’s point of view. Looking for Alaska is one of the best Y.A. books ever written.
