What seems to be freely chosen behaviour is really the result of internal and external forces acting upon the individual.’ Discuss this view. Refer to at least one topic area in your answer. (12 marks) • P-E-E-L – Point, Expansion, Evidence, Link • Biological determinism, the belief that all behaviour and thought is caused by the action of the nervous system and genetic factors, provides an example in support of free will being an illusion (Point). Numerous twin studies have pointed towards a genetic pre-disposition in behaviours such as depression and schizophrenia (Expansion / Elaboration). Gottesman and Shields found a concordance rate of 46% for Schizophrenia in monozygotic twins in comparison to 14% in dizygotic twins (Evidence) suggesting that genes play a role in determining behaviour and that it is not freely chosen (Link back to question)
