MATERIALS • Pencil or pen • Language Arts Binder: for handouts, writing, daily Do Nows, notes, etc. • Literature Textbook: class set, use online version for homework • Grammar Workbook • Hoover Reads book or other novels as necessary
READING • Literature textbook: short stories, essays, articles, plays, poetry, biography and autobiography, informational text • Audio versions of literature selections, teacher reading, “popcorn” reading, partner reading, choral reading, independent reading • Reading Comprehension tests: multiple choice and short answer/essay • Class Novels: The Outsiders, Lord of the Flies, others
READING, continued • Independent Reading: Hoover Reads; one book report due every six weeks • Oral presentations and book talks • Reading Record log • Reading projects (research, art projects/posters, creative writing, annotated bibliographies using NoodleTools, etc.)
VOCABULARY • Academic Vocabulary (exposition, simile, metaphor, foreshadowing, infer) • Literature selection vocabulary (portly, languish, evasive) • Word roots, suffixes and prefixes • Spelling and vocabulary tests • Class spelling bees • Vocabulary in writing
WRITING • Informal Writing: daily Do Now journals, in-class writing • Creative Writing Projects • Writing Genres for the 7th grade assessment: • Autobiographical Narrative • Fictional Narrative
WRITING, continued • Summary • Persuasive • Response to Literature • Writing for homework and “on-demand” writing • Peer editing and feedback • Teacher feedback
GRAMMAR • Parts of Speech • Parts of a sentence and sentence structure • Mechanics: capitalization, punctuation, special focus on avoiding fragments (incomplete sentences) and run-on sentences.
OTHER GOALS • Take a field trip: suggestions and help with planning most appreciated! • Collaborate with the librarian and use the Library effectively for writing, research projects, and book selection • Expand my classroom library: if you’d like to donate a used book or a new one from the Book Fair, I’d be grateful! • Find and promote writing contests that my students can enter • Speeches, debates, group projects and presentations
