About Don Phin • Attorney since 1983 • Developed HR That Works • Written five books • Spoken to thousands of CEOs
Question: Have you ever fantasized about going to work and having nobody to manage?
Remember this: IF it doesn’t make sense… …don’t try to make sense out of it!
Shakespeare said… All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances. And one man in his time plays many parts.”
Victims in the Workplace • Age old battle • control is the main theme • manifested in legal system
Why Play Victim ??? Because….it feels good!
Bosses are Expected to Be… • Uncaring • Manipulative • Controlling • Rich • Secretive
We All Play Villain! Can anyone honestly say the only time they yelled at someone was in a true emergency?
The Drama of Work • something feels unfair • gather evidence • find the lie • ignites the triumph energy
What Would Be Fair? • You are good and caring • They are good and caring • 50/50 seems fair
Emotional Inequality • 20%’rs (victims) • 80%’rs (villains) • 80%’rs (negative heroes)
Baby, Light My Fire • procrastinate • hurl your pain • use their energy
Moving From 20% to 40% • coax • encourage • inspire
Moving from 80% to 40% • let go of control • be inclusive • have faith
Speaking For Yourself • YOU, YOU, YOU • use “I” words • ask them to speak about their experience, not yours
Avoiding Conflict • “wow, that’s interesting!” • stay off stage! • walk and breath
The Plot Poem The timeless drama continues, The Plot takes center stage. Goodness Triumphs Over Evil, emotions leading the way. Victim, villain and hero, we play all the parts; Blaming and justifying, breaking each other’s hearts. Playing roles we don’t quite understand, letting pain of the past ruin our perfect plans. Let’s tear off these masks and run out the stage door! We don’t need this drama to learn our lessons anymore!
