Quorum Sensing “The more elaborate our means of communication, the less we communicate.” -Joseph Priestley ……………..unless you are a bacteria.
Bacteria do not just act randomly, they actually communicate and coordinate with each other.
They do this by releasing signalling molecules into their environment.
Not only are bacteria able to release signalling molecules in the environment, bacteria are also able to “sense” how many molecules are in the area.
This ability to sense signalling molecules and other bacteria in the area is referred to today as…
Quorum Sensing!
The quorum sensing ability is helpful for bacteria in a number of ways. It allows a group of bacteria to respond quickly to an environmental change, an attack from other micro-organisms, or a potentially harmful toxin in the area.
It also allows pathogenic bacteria to coordinate in a way that will break past a host’s immune system and infect the host.
Some bacteria are able to sense signalling molecules in the environment that were released by a different kind of bacteria.
The variety of signalling molecules is so large, each molecule can be considered a word in a language. Bacteria will have a different response to each molecule they sense.
Some research in quorum sensing includes a study in how to interfere with a bacteria’s quorum sensing and signalling molecules. This will allow us to change the quorum sensing system of pathogenic bacteria and prevent them from being dangerous.
