Capsule History - 1 • issued numerous letters to Ola Dalhman, then Chairman of WGB, and Ambassador Hoffmann, then Executive Secretary, calling for the CTBTO to provide free and open access to data • were met with polite rebuffs saying in effect the PTS’s hands are tied until WGB provides the ‘proper guidance’ • considered inviting the CTBTO to join the FDSN, but realized would not fly

  5. Capsule History - 2 • decided at Potsdam meeting in 2004 to continue pressing the CTBTO, but also to shift emphasis to bilateral data exchange arrangements for IMS primary and auxiliary (SHI) data

  6. Capsule History - 3 • decided at Santiago Chile meeting in 2005 to make the WG inactive; would not hold meetings but the Excom would discuss CTBTO issues • emphasis would stay on fostering bilateral data exchange arrangements

  7. Capsule History - 4 • since Santiago meeting Canada is now sending all IMS SHI data to the FDSN Archive, Kazakhstan has agreed to send array data, and discussions are currently underway with Niger

  8. Capsule History - 5 • post Dec. 26 2004 tsunami, CTBTO has agreed to share data with UNESCO-certified tsunami warning centres (PTWC & Japanese TC) • while hopeful, this is a fragile arrangement
