WARM-UP What is a thesis statement? What should it accomplish in a piece of writing? Please respond in your journal.
HW Complete the crossover SAQ on “Because I could not stop for death” Turn in SAQ with poetry annotations and TPCASTT
TDEC T(h): thesis or topic sentence D: detail E: elaboration C: commentary
T(S): thesis/topic sentence thesis (T) – a point of focus with claim value. When we have a prompt to “write to,” we work to answer it, and that answer is our thesis – hopefully a beautifully written one that impacts our reader from the outset.
T: thesis/topic sentence (T)hesis refers to an opening statement in a piece of writing that works to focus the reader on the subject of the writing. Intellectual message + emotional charge (the tone) = theme A thesis offers an idea that must be supported. T can also stand for Topic Sentence when it acts as the thesis for a paragraph.
D: details detailed proof/evidence, example, quotation. (D)etail is a quote or a quote fragment (preferably). It is usually woven in with supporting Elaboration.
E-elaboration elaboration is factual information given by the student about the chosen detail. Elaboration is defined as: “1. the act or process of going from the simple or basic to the complex or advanced”; and “2. the representation of something in terms that go beyond the facts.”
C-commentary Commentary=your comment/insight it is arguable because it is insight and, therefore, opinion. This largely answers ‘Why?’ the author wrote – getting to ‘deeper’ meaning.
Crossover SAQ A crossover SAQ occurs when you are given two separate pieces to read and must answer one short answer question about both pieces.
Crossover SAQ You must: Answer for both texts Give evidence/analysis for both texts Provide commentary on how the two answers tie together. You have the same amount of space in which to respond to a x-over, so answers must be succinct and condensed. Edit, edit, edit.
