  1. John 12:9-23

  2. Purpose Why are we here?

  3. The Theme of our purpose

  4. A. To show a difference in our circle of influence

  5. (Joh 12:9-11) Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

  6. (Mat 5:16) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

  7. B. To deliver a message of the future

  8. (Joh 12:12) On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

  9. Over 800 specific references of the Lord’s Day in the Bible 5 times more references to the 2nd coming than the 1st coming

  10. (2Pe 3:9-11) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

  11. C. To direct them to the help they need

  12. (Joh 12:13-15) Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

  13. (Psa 118:25-26) Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.

  14. (Zec 9:9-10) Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.

  15. II. The Threat to our purpose

  16. A. A dullness to the believers of Christ

  17. (Joh 12:16) These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

  18. (Heb 5:11-14) Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

  19. B. A danger to the religious crowds power

  20. (Joh 12:19) The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

  21. III. The Transcending of our purpose

  22. A. Going beyond our demographics

  23. (Joh 12:20) And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:

  24. (Rev 7:9) After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

  25. B. Making connection among our diversity

  26. (Joh 12:21-22) The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. Philip cometh and tellethAndrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

  27. C. Realizing our directive

  28. (Joh 12:23) And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
