Johnson Takes Office • Kennedy was shot at 12:30 22 Nov 1963 • At 1:20 he is pronounced dead • At 2:38 Johnson takes the oath of office aboard Air Force One prior to take on return to Washington • He becomes the 36th President • Mrs. Kennedy is still wearing the clothes soaked with her husband blood

Elementary and Secondary Education Act • LBJ is a former social studies teacher • Signs law in April 1965 • Establishes Dept. of Education • Federal funds for education • Meant to eliminate education gap • Sets standards for education • Essentially takes over education from states
