  1. Multicomponent Block Copolymers as Precursors to Robust Nanoporous MaterialsMarc A. Hillmyer, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, DMR 1006370 Nanoporous materials are useful for selective separation membranes. We have shown that they can be prepared from various block polymer precursors. While quite versatile nanoporous materials result, they tend to suffer from poor mechanical performance. To address this common deficiency, we have designed and synthesized ABACtetrablock terpolymers containing an etchable C component and a mechanically tough ABA component. Such ABA triblocks are inherently tough thermoplastic elastomers, and thus the resulting nanoporous materials should exhibit exceptional mechanical properties. We have prepared and characterized polymers that self-assemble into an ordered core-shell cylinder morphology, exhibit robust mechanical behavior, and can be etched to generate nanoporous materials. Studies are underway to assess the efficacy of these polymers as high performance membrane materials for advanced applications in, for example, water purification and virus filtration. 2. Development of a Polymer Lab Exercisefor High School StudentsMarc A. Hillmyer, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, DMR 1006370 Marc and Carla In collaboration with Ms. Carla Steinbring from Kennedy High School in Bloomington Minnesota and Ms. Grayce Theryo a Ph.D. student in Materials Science at UMN we have initiated the development of a high school chemistry lab experiment designed to teach the students about polymers and how to modify and evaluate their properties. We used starches as our base material and emphasized the renewable and sustainable nature of these natural polymers. We plan to pilot this experiment in the upcoming academic year and will then revise, modify and prepare for broad dissemination. This interaction was part of the RET program of the NSF.
