Policy Governance • In Policy Governance the Board (Conference Executive) is responsible for the whole organization but accomplishes this in two, distinct ways. • It creates a clear division of labour between the Board and the Executive Director (Executive Secretary). • The Conference Executive decides upon the “Ends”, the goals to be achieved • It empowers the Executive Director to focuses on the “Means”, how we will accomplish our goals, but within clear limitations
Role of Executive • In the Policy Governance approach, the three major tasks of the board are: • Listening to the people (owners) • Developing policies • Monitoring implementation of policies
Policies Ends • What good, for whom, at what cost? • Ends describe what we would like the Conference to look like because of the work that it does Limitations • What do we not want? • Limitations restrict what actions can be taken by the Executive Secretary and management

Policy Development • The process of clearly defining Ends can be quite challenging, especially when keeping in mind our priorities for limited resources • Policies are reviewed and updated regularly to ensure they represent the current goals and priorities of the church • The BC Executive is currently working on a new version of the Ends document which will be clearer and easier to understand • The Executive plans to meet four times in the coming year to finish this work soon
Conclusion • We are the Executive and Staff of BC Conference. We are here to work on behalf of the people of Conference. We are friendly, come talk to us!
