Postsecondary Outreach Campaign • Secretary of Education presentations: • Public College Presidents • Private College President Advisory Group • Community College Presidents • Chief Academic Officers • Prominent Virginia Business Leaders • Virginia Board of Education • State Council of Higher Education Academic Affairs Committee • P-16 Council
Gathering Data • Feedback requested from 30 institutions: • 10 four-year/junior college public institutions • 10 four-year private institutions • 10 community colleges • Each to provide two small multi-disciplinary • faculty teams (3-5) to complete math and English essential skills survey.
Gathering Data • Conference Call Instructions: • Specific entry-level, credit-bearing first year general education courses • Rate each skill as to how critical it is for success in specific course • Aim for level of competency an 18-year-old entering college should have, not level that may be accommodated • One survey per course discussed • Differentiate • Additional comments on essential skills

Narrative Feedback: English • Largest overall emphasis on basic comprehension skills—identification, understanding, and beginning to analyze the key ideas of passages and texts. • Emphasis across disciplines on the ability to raise critical questions after reading a text. • Emphasis across disciplines on research and study skills, particularly citations, use of sources, and academic integrity. • Noticeable emphasis among community colleges on basic grammar and sentence-level construction and syntax skills. • Significant emphasis placedon organizational skills, time management and other soft skills.
