  1. State Epidemiological Workgroup: New Routes to Gathering Data Susan Depue, PhD – SEOW Epidemiologist Missouri Institute of Mental Health

  2. Who are we?

  3. MO Behavioral Health Epidemiology Workgroup • Federal funding made available by CSAP and administered by Synetics for Management Decisions, Inc. • Supports an SEOW epidemiologist position, data infrastructure and analytics • November 1, 2010 through October 31, 2011

  4. Mission • To create a process for using data that will illustrate a picture of behavioral health issues in the State and its communities; • To guide behavioral health prevention policy, program development and evaluation in the State; and • To disseminate information.

  5. Goals & Objectives • Use population-based behavioral health data to guide and improve policymaking, program development, and outcomes monitoring. • Inventory and assess data needs and data gaps. • Enhance capacity to use behavioral health data. • Promote data driven decision-making at the state and local level. • Provide advocacy tools for community coalitions. • Improve access and user interface with data and data products. • Increase dissemination of data and analyses, in particular, to those stakeholders critical to the shaping of Missouri’s prevention infrastructure.

  6. Goals & Objectives • Facilitate interagency and community collaboration for the collection, analysis, interpretation, and utilization of mental health and substance abuse related data. • Ensure that the response of the MO-BHEW is culturally competent. • Ensure that the MO-BHEW perspective is inclusive of all aspects of the causes and consequences of mental illness and substance abuse • Promote common standards. • Reduce duplicative data collection efforts among state agencies and partners to the degree possible. • Promote data sharing. • Provide outreach to other organizations with an interest in behavioral health data.

  7. What are we doing?

  8. Deliverables

  9. Coalition Data Needs Survey • 17 RSCs, 12 CMHCs and 62 coalitions responded • Substance Abuse Prevention Data Needs: • Three data gaps were selected as top priorities by most respondents. These were usage rates for specific substances, usage rates for specific populations and cost to community data.

  10. Coalition Data Needs Survey • 17 RSCs, 12 CMHCs and 62 coalitions responded • Mental Health Data Needs:

  11. Missouri Student Survey • Discussion of any needed changes • Discussion of integration of various data collection methods in different state agencies • For Missouri’s use

  12. State EpiProfile • Overview of Substance Abuse, Mental Health and Risk and Protective Factor data for the state • National / State comparisons where available • Subpopulation data where available • Data gaps

  13. State Epi Narrative • More text based version of State Epi Profile • Focus on a few key variables in depth rather than overview of all • More use of local data

  14. Community Epi Profile • One per county + St. Louis City = 115 profiles • Overview of Substance Abuse, Mental Health and Risk and Protective Factor data for the county, where possible • County / state comparison where available • Tables with some text

  15. Data Querying Tool • The website! • Section for pre-generated reports mentioned above • Database section for users to run their own queries – Missouri Student Survey data to start with, information with low counts will not be displayed to protect confidentiality • “How to Use Data” section for novice users • Available no later than October

  16. Status Report • Additional mental health data (primarily treatment) for state, region and county • Additional county level Missouri Student Survey

  17. Moving Forward • Dissemination Plan • 3+ target audiences - info will be tailored to each audience • Current work plan includes monthly briefs, reports listed on the website, quarterly webinars and possible YouTube videos • Data Gap Plan • Uses Initial Data Gap Assessment • Will lead to starting to fill gaps in Year 2 and 3

  18. Briefs (sign up if you are interested!)

  19. Briefs • One page documents • Provides an overview of a topic of interest • Send via email

  20. Topics • To date: • Missouri compared to US • Subpopulation usage rates • Pending • Link between depression and marijuana use • Kids riding in cars with drunk drivers • Compulsive gambling • Special populations such as veterans, LGBT populations, racial groups. • Suggestions?

  21. How can you use all this?

  22. Data driven decision making in the community • County level data can help guide intervention strategies • Subpopulation data can help determine target populations

  23. Grant applications • It is becoming more common for funders to want data to support a funding request • Even if not asked for, data in an application shows a level of sophistication • Feel free to copy / paste from workgroup products!

  24. Awareness building • People are interested in numbers. Share data with: • Newsletters • Presentations / discussions with stakeholders • Local media
