Emancipation Proclamation • Lincoln announces plan on September 22, 1862 • Signed January 1, 1863 • Only applied to Confederate areas • Technically did not free a single enslaved African “…all persons held as slaves within any state…in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”
African Americans Fight for Freedom • 180,000 serve • 38,000 become casualties • 22 were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (highest award for bravery) • Regiments participated in 500 engagements. • Regiments made up 10% of the Union army at the end of the war. • Faced extreme measures of discrimination.
