Factors Factor: One integer is a factor of another nonzero integer if it divides that integer with remainder zero. Example: 2 is a factor of 8.
Prime and Composite Prime Number: an integer greater than 1 with exactly two positive factors, 1 and the number itself. Examples: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, …. Composite number: an integer greater than 1 with more than two positive factors. Examples: 4, 6, 8, 9, ….
Prime Factorization Prime Factorization: writing a composite number as a product of its prime factors. Example: 12 4 3 2 2 12 = 2 * 2 * 3
Greatest Common Factor (GCF) Common Factors: Factors that are the same for two or more numbers or expressions. Greatest Common Factor (GCF): the greatest of these common factors. Examples: 40 and 60 GCF = 20
Least Common Multiple (LCM) Multiple: the product of that number and any nonzero whole number. Examples: Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, …. Least Common Multiple: The smallest multiple in common. Example: 12, 24, and 36 are common multiples of 4 and 6, but 12 is the LCM.
