  5. Framework for NC • ICT remains as part of the NC for all Key Stages • That ICT becomes a ‘Basic’ NC Subject • Requirements be established to ensure it permeates throughout all NC subjects • They noted the arguments for the wider teaching of Computer Science in Secondary Schools • There should be alteration to the structure of the Key Stages (KS2 divided – KS3 to Y7&8?)

  6. Gove speech to BETT • the ICT curriculum was flawed… and boring • The Programme of Study for ICT would be ‘disapplied’ from Sept 2012 • ICT will remain compulsory at all key stage • The DfE would encourage new Computer Science GCSEs • Computer Studies may be included in the eBACC • That technology can be embedded across all subjects • The Programme of Study would remain on the website as a reference • The new curriculum would be designed by ‘wiki’ - http://schoolstech.org.uk/

  7. Royal Society Report • ICT should be disaggregated into clearly defined areas such as digital literacy, Information Technology and Computer Science • There should be training for, and more specialist teachers of Computing • Schools should offer Computer Science from the age of 14 • There should be more rigorous Computer Science examinations at Levels 2 and 3 • There should be more resources for enrichment activities

  9. Royal Society Report Think of English Digital literacy – reading and writing Computer Science – English Language Information Technology – English Literature

  10. digital literacy Digital literacy should be understood to mean the basic skill or ability to use a computer confidently, safely and effectively, including: the ability to use office software such as word processors, email and presentation software, the ability to create and edit images, audio and video, and the ability to use a web browser and internet search engines. These are the skills that teachers of other subjects at secondary school should be able to assume that their pupils have, as an analogue of being able to read and write.

  11. Computer Science Computer Science should be interpreted as referring to the scientific discipline of Computer Science, covering principles such as algorithms, data structures, programming, systems architecture, design, problem solving etc.

  12. Information Technology Information Technology should be understood to mean the assembly, deployment, and configuration of digital systems to meet user needs for particular purposes.
