  2. 1) What was Russian society like in the mid 19th century? Agricultural, traditional, huge mix of ethnicities and people (only 40% were actually Russian!)

  3. 2) How was Russia governed? Autocratic, imperial monarchy- The Tsar as an absolute ruler, no parliament, no political parties, no tradition of democracy.

  4. 3) What percentage of the population were peasants, and how did the elite view them? 80% (4/5) “The Dark masses”

  5. 4) What happened in 1881? Alexander II assassinated

  6. 5) Who replaced him? Alexander III

  7. 6) What were the main problems that Alexander III faced? (4) • Keeping multi-ethnic empire together • Dealing with liberals and extremists • Maintain supreme political authority • Modernise

  8. 7) What was the name of the man in charge of the church, and Alexander’s leading minister, at this time? Pobedonestsev

  9. 8) What was his message to the people attending church? Obedience to the Tsar first, spirituality second

(5) • Released manifesto proclaiming absolute power • Restricted university education to most wealthy • Restricted press freedoms • Established ‘Statute of State Security’ (government controlled courts) to try political opponents. • Use of Okhrana (violence & intimidation)
