NWS Eastern Region Climate Training Eastern Region Climate Workshop September 16-17, 2003 Raleigh, NC Heather Hauser NWS Eastern Region Scientific Services Division
NWS Climate Services NWS field staff must be able to… • Understand and apply climate products and services (e.g., NCEP, NOAA laboratories, Data Center products and papers). • Incorporate and apply new ideas and techniques of dynamic climatology at the local level. • Communicate climate information and concepts as part of the office outreach program.
Climate Training Options • Climate Services Division (CSD) Partnership Program • Professional Development Series (PDS) • Other climate training
CSD Partnership Program • 2 week program • Become familiar with CPC and CSD • Identify and develop local climate partnerships Prerequisites: • Interest in climate services • Motivated to develop local or regional partnerships • Essay Funding: CSD covers travel and per diem expenses
NWS Climate PDSPCU 1 – Climate Data Provide accurate & consistent climate information • Climate Data SST, snow/ice cover, indices (ENSO, NAO…) • Climate Forecasts CPC weekly, monthly, seasonal • Climate Information ENSO, NAO, PDO, global warming, aerosols/volcanic ash …
NWS Climate PDSPCU 2 – Climate Variability Understanding of climate variability topics • Residence Training • Teletraining • Web-based training
NWS Climate PDSPCU 3 – CPC Climate Products Familiarity with the CPC product suite • Self-guided interactive • exercises • Teletraining
NWS Climate PDSPCU 4 – Application of CPC products Interpret and apply CPC products • Incorporate CPC climate forecast into local products and services • Use statistical techniques Downscaling Compositing • Apply local detail to CPC products
NWS Climate PDSPCU 5 – Public Outreach Respond to customers in a concise, consistent and timely manner regarding climate products and services • Historical Climate Data Describes sources of Climate Data and procedures for data downloading • XMClimate Access to long term climate records with display, search, graph, edit capabilities • Local Climatology (9/03) Describes computation of local climatology statistics Regional Climate Centers XMClimate GUI
NWS Climate PDSPCU 6 – Data Stewardship Maintain the integrity of the climate record through sound stewardship of: • Observational platforms • Sites • Instruments • Procedures Under Development
NWS Climate PDSPCU 6 – Data Stewardship PCU 6 will address: • Radiosonde replacement process • Ten Guidelines for Climate Monitoring (NOAA) • Site factors influencing observation instruments • NOAA applications of data • Non-NOAA applications of data Under Development
Other Climate Training Opportunities • Local climatological studies • Climate workshops • Develop & sustain partnerships
