In order to complete and pass this course, I need to have 100 hours of work experience at my work placement –Waves Coffee House. - Right now, I only have 39.5 hrs. because I began to work in December. - It is difficult for teachers to contact the work placements for every students in the class. They did their best to help students to find the right placement. (Thank you! )

What are my duties? • My duties are: • 1. Basic duties, which means cleaning jobs. • - wash, clean and sanitize dishes, tables, floors, windows and washrooms. • 2. Fill up shelves • - cups, lids, sugars, beverages and snacks • 3. Brew dark coffees • - They have to re-brew every hour • 4. Retail • - Communicate with customers and return changes • 5. Serve Customers • - Warm up snack and soups for them, and make teas.
New skills that I learned: • How to brew coffee • How to do retail and using retail machine • Social Interactions (have more confidence) • Personal Evaluation of my performance: - If I am an employer I would give myself A on my performance. It would be 90% because there are things that still needs improvements, such as talk louder.
My First Day… • I was excited and nervous on my first day of work. I have three well- experienced staffs (including my employer) assisting, instructing and teaching me. They were all very nice, helpful and patient. I learned many basic tasks on my first day. Firstly, I learned where the recycling bin and garbage places are. They locate at the backyard of the Wave’s Coffee House, and the recycling bin will be locked after 5:00pm everyday. Secondly, I learned how to do cleaning jobs properly, such as which sanitizers(soaps) are use for mopping, cleaning counters, washrooms, windows and dishes. Then, I learned how to fill milks and creams in the bottle so that the customers can use at the side of the counter, as well as straws, sugars, coffee cups, lids and paper towels. Lastly, I learned the how to brew dark coffee as well as how to serve snakes and coffee for the customers. The processes were very simple.
My Best Day… • My BESTday at my work placement is the day that I memorized how to use machine to brew coffee, make tea and became familiar with the retail machine. Since I only work once or twice a week, I usually forget what I learned today by the next time I work. I was very happy that I memorized these new skills because now I have more confidence on what I am doing and I can be more helpful at my work placement. My Worst Day… • MyWORST day at my work placement is the day that I swept all the cigarette butts around the store in the rain. It was cold and wet outside, but I have to clean the area around the store. I used broom to swept outside first, then I had to wear gloves to pick up all the cigarette butts in the garden. It was a very unpleasant tasks!!!
The Funniest Thing… • The funniest thing that happened at my work placement is the day that my supervisors and I forgot to put the metal block back into the dish washer after cleaning the dish washer. The metal block is use to stop the hot water from draining out. • -If you are work during the night shift, you have to clean the dish washer. In order to clean the dish washer, you have to put the metal block out from the dish washer and press the “drain” button to let all the dirty water flow out. After dirty water flow out, you have to put the metal block back into the dish washer, so that the hot water can fill up again. • - We forgot to put it back after cleaning the dish washer, as the result the hot water flow out from the hole. The whole store ran out of hot water (including the washroom). At first, we were all confusing at why there’s no hot water anymore, then when we figure out the reason, we were all laughing at ourselves (oops!).
I am proud of myself because • I am very helpful and useful at my work placement when its busy. I have more confidence when I am speaking to the customers , I know how to brew coffee and serve the customers, and I learned how the retail machine functions. • However, I could improve on my speed, movement, and talk louder when serve and communicate with the customers. • The person I admire the most at the job is my employer because she is nice, diligent, thoughtful, skillful and patient. I have learn many new things from her.
Changes in myself after working at Waves Coffee House are… • 1. become more out-going • 2. have more patience and confidence in doing things • 3. began to drink coffee • This experience changed the way I view people’s career path. Everyone always have to start at the very beginning (from the basic level) no matter which job they apply for, in order to climb up to the higher level. By the time they are at the higher position of their job, they have already become “skillful” employers.
If I had to do the job over again, I would force myself to become a fast learner, so that I can learn and do more things in a day. • Things that surprised me about this job (Waves Coffee House) : • Open from early morning (6:00am) until midnight everyday • 2. Sell four meals (breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner) though it’s just a café • 3. Although most products are more expansive than Starbucks and Delaney’s , it have many customers and they like it.
I would choose the same placement if I had to do this again • because it is a good way to experience life and is the best way to build strength in math, interpersonal and communication skills. • Challenges and how I overcome them:
There isNOTHINGthat my work experience place (Waves Coffee House) needs to change because it is already a good place for students to gain experience. It not only provides a great opportunity for students to gain work experience, but also allows students to learn new things that they never learn before, such as making different type of beverages (Latte, Mocha, Macchiato, Cappuccino..etc). • What type of education is required for this field of work? - You need to at least have High School education and an excellent math skill, so that you can do the retail. Pay Range: • Starting payment is $10.25, but if you have Food Safe you can earn more. • - Food Safe is a discipline for people who work in the restaurants cafes. It trains waiters how to handling, preparation and storage of food in order to avoid illness (e.g. Food poision).
