  2. What is personality? • Personality- characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that make a person unique.

  3. Personality is... • Consistent- regular, predicts how we behave. • Psychological and Physiological- a psychological concept that is influenced by our biology. • Impacts Behavior and Actions • Expressed Many Ways- thoughts, feelings, relationships, behaviors.

  4. How we measure it: • Self-Report Inventories - Surveys • MMPI, MBPI, Big 5, Inventories (Depression, Anxiety, etc.) • Projective Tests - Ambiguous testing • Rorschach, Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), House-Tree-Person

  7. Be careful- many “psychological” tests and quizzes are not reliable or validated!

  8. Reliability and Validity • Many online tests and quizzes are not STANDARDIZED and are just for fun- not scientifically validated. • Don’t be fooled! • Reliability- Consistency; will you always get the same result? • Validity- Accuracy; is it measuring what it says it is?

  12. Thematic Apperception Test • What has led up to the event shown? • What is happening at the moment? • What are the characters feeling and thinking? • What is the outcome of the story?

Projective Tests • Thematic Apperception Tests (TAT)(supposedly) reveal someone’s motives, concerns, and the way they see the world through stories they make up • Rorschach Tests rely on interpreting ambiguous inkblots. • Not as reliable or valid as Self-Report Inventories. • about ambiguous scenes.
