  2. Current Estimates • Cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States,accounting for approximately 1 of every 5 deaths (438,000 people) each year.

  3. U.S Estimates • Approximately 21% of all adults smoke cigarettes in the U.S • Smoking is found more common in men, 23.9%, than in women, 18% • It is also more common among adults who live below the poverty level as compared to those who live above it

  4. Demographic Stats in the U.s • American Indians/Alaskan natives- 32.4% • African Americans- 23% • Caucasians – 21.9% • Hispanics - 15.2% • Asians – 10.4%

Mortality Statistics • Cigarette smoking kills about 259,500 men and 178,000 women in the U.S each year • Adults who smoke cigarettes die 14 years earlier than non smokers • Total deaths of tobacco use outnumber the total deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, suicides and murders combined.

Global Info • About 12 times more British people have died from smoking than from World War II • Roughly 80,000-100,000 children worldwide start smoking everyday • Almost 25% of youth alve in the Western Pacific Region will die from smoking • The tobacco market is controlled by American, British and Japanese multinational conglomerates.
