MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION TO CONTAIN HIGH TEMPERATURE GREEN LIQUORDouglas SingbeilIEA ANNEX XV MeetingAugust 20-21, 2002
Materials used to contain kraft liquors • Carbon steel • Austenitic stainless steels (S30403, S31603) • Duplex stainless steels (S32304, S32205) • Nickel-base alloys (N06600, N08825, N08625)
Materials susceptible to corrosion and SCC in kraft liquors • Carbon steel • Austenitic stainless steels (S30403, S31603) • Duplex stainless steels (S32304, S32205) • Nickel-base alloys (N06600, N08825, N08625)
Examples of corrosion and SCC in alloys containing kraft liquors • SCC and corrosion of carbon steel in white, green and black liquors • Corrosion of 304L, 309L exposed to hot black liquors in batch digesters • SCC of 304L and 316L piping systems transporting high-solids black liquor • SCC of 304L and 2205 in white liquor oxidizer service • SCC, corrosion and corrosion fatigue of 304L, A825 and A625 outer layers of composite tubes in recovery boiler floors and walls
Caustic cracking 304L 316L 0.1 mm/y Atmospheric Boiling Point Solubility Limit Source: AvestaPolarit and Sandvik Steel
Little existing data for kraft liquors at temperatures above ~ 150C • Sulphide concentration known to have a significant effect on SCC of stainless alloys • Manufacturing practices may affect resistance to corrosion and SCC
Proposed Approach • Systematic program looking at corrosion and crack propagation under controlled conditions • Use both slow strain rate and fracture mechanics approaches to evaluate resistance to SCC • Develop solid database of materials performance in advance of commercial application of pressurized black liquor gasification
