Discipline • Discipline is training in a disciple • Involves all aspects of training • Instruction:saying what to do • Example:showing what to do • Oversight: watching one practice what to do • Integration: give a task; require accountability • Correction: for mistakes or irresponsibility • Consequences: learning by experience what not to do • Punishment: for serious infractions, rebellion

Discipline • We are to make disciples Matt. 28:19 • Instruction:saying what to do 1 Tim. 4:11 • Example:showing what to do 1 Tim. 4:12 • Oversight: watching one practice what to do 1 Peter 5:1-4 • Integration: give a task; require accountability Heb. 13:17 • Correction: for mistakes or irresponsibility 1 Thess. 5:14 • Consequences: learning by experience what not to do Heb. 12:3-12, 1 Cor. 11:31-32 • Punishment: 1 Cor. 5; 2 Cor. 2:7-11; 2 Thess. 3:14-15

Corrective Discipline • More than sending a letter • Not withdrawing fellowship • Withdrawing company (action to correspond to spiritual reality of fellowship broken by sin) • What about those who “withdraw themselves?” • Still are to be “noted” 2 Thess. 3:14 • Delivered to Satan in the assembly 1 Cor. 5:4-5 • To cause shameto repentancetosavehis soul • Acts 8:22-24 for erring brother • Acts 8:35-39 to become a brother
