Recognition • You can get a vTeam certificate if you complete the minimum of 10 hours volunteering • There are better certificates as you do more hours • Chance to win awards at the Student Activity Awards • Volunteering hours are logged in a vTeam passport – these can be collected from reception

  5. Membership Once you have chosen an activity, let your whole membership know Then email Tracy your Community and Volunteering Officer with names Remind participating members the day before the event

  6. Other Institutions If you have your own links with other charities, you are welcome to volunteer for them instead. You will, however, need to think about: • Travel (the vTeam can still cover travel expenses if reasonable – flights to USA won’t be refunded!!) • Documentation, including a risk assessment • Taking photos to prove you were there!

  7. Standards Make sure you update your society’s Standards Pages with all the details about your activity. To work towards an award, you will need:

  8. Societies Guild Events • Societies Guild events for your application include • Winter Fayre • Open Days • Society Fayres in January Make sure you plan these in advance so you don’t miss your chance for a standard!!

  11. Fundraising A great way to boost your budget or donate to a good cause BUT: BE AWARE! • It is illegal to subsidise charity fundraising with SU funds • It is illegal to donate money from your funds to charity So, when fundraising for charity, you must cover the costs from the funds you raise

  12. Fundraising Ideas • Cake/Krispy Kreme sales • Quizzes • Raffles • Auctions • Race Nights • Large Events, e.g. Christmas/Summer Ball

  13. Lounge Lizzard • In Top Bar we have a machine called the Lounge Lizzard. • Societies can book this out by emailing Neil Diggens ndiggens@essex.ac.uk • The machine can run race nights, pub quizzes, raffles and other games which can be used for fundraising. • This is FREE so use it!

  14. Alcohol and Food Alcohol cannot be sold for fundraising purposes To sell homemade food, at least one member must have a Food Hygiene Certificate – email sadteam@essex.ac.ukfor more info

  15. Once money is raised • If money is raised for the society, they need to come to reception and fill out a paying in slip. The money will be put into their club fund • If the money is raised for a charity, they will have to come to reception, fill in a paying in slip but also a RAG form, the money will then go through our RAG account and straight to charity.

Other Important Considerations Freebies: you are welcome to ask companies for donations, but please write a letter and explain what the funds will go towards No need to buy prizes if companies will give you stuff for free – put your society logo on the letter to make it more official. Small companies like restaurants and one off shops are more likely to give you vouchers etc. than chains.
