  2. Helping Verbs Hi! I'm Harry Helping Verb and I'm so helpful I will help you learn the 23 Helping Verbs by telling you a story. The title of the story is Old Mr. Do.  Like some stories, this story has a moral. The moral is: "Maybe Mr. Do should have a will". Read on and you will see why! Old Mr. Do

  4. Mr. Do •    Once upon a time there was a wealthy merchant named Mr. Do. Mr. Do was very old and very rich. His many relatives were dreaming of the day the old man would die. They wondered which one of them would inherit his money. Finally, one day Mr. Do did die. All the relatives searched his house for a will. They didn't find one. They searched his house three times. They still did not find a will. The relatives did not get one dime of Mr. Do's fortune. •  The moral: Maybe Mr. Doshouldhave a will.  •     Just remember this sentence and you will know how to set up a chart of the 23 helping verbs!  The largest "family" is the "BE" family with eight members. The other five families have three members each.

  6. Write down the helping verb… 1. Now the boys will sing a song. 2. Roxanne should finish before eight o’clock. 3. I could never jump that high. 4. By three o’clock the girls had walked six kilometers. 5. Rita did not see the rattlesnake.

  8. Plot ~ The Exposition REMEMBER…We are STILL in the Exposition… Which includes: the setting (time and place) characters conflict

  9. The Exposition ~ Characters • Today we will be looking at the stories characters. • A character is…a person, animal, or imaginary creature • Characters are extremely important because they are how the reader interacts with a story.

  10. Characterization the way an author presents characters. Direct Characterization • a character is described by the author, the narrator or the other characters. Indirect Characterization • a character's traits are revealed by action and speech.

  11. Character Traits We use specific character traits to characterize a character. There are two types of Character traits. • Internal • the personal thoughts, • feelings, • desires, • plans, and • Their motives (things that make them act the way they do) • External • What the character looks like • What they say • What they do (the way they act) • How the author describes the character

  12. Types of Characters • There are 4 types of characters: • Major • Minor • Flat/Static • Round/Dynamic

  13. Major Characters • These are the characters the story is ALL about… 2 Types • Protagonist ~ the main character, who is not necessarily a hero or a heroine • Antagonist ~is the opponent; the antagonist may be society, nature, a person, or an aspect of the protagonist.

Minor Characters • Minor characters enter the novel for a specific reason and may then not be heard of again … • They exist throughout the novel "in the shadow" of the major character… • They may be involved in a conflict with a major character and are essential to the plot, but only so that something can be learned or shown about the major character.

  15. Round/Dynamic Character • a major character in a work of fiction who encounters conflict and is changed by it.

  16. Flat/Static Characters • minor characters who do not tend to undergo any type of change during a story. • They start out one way and end up that way.

  20. Body Biography • Each of you will receive instructions for completing a Body Biography. • You should make sure that you complete this activity directly in your daybooks. • ALL parts of the body biography have to be complete in order to receive full credit.
