Research & Case Studies • Urban Flood Management – Case study of Bangalore • Case Studies on Health Care Management published by ATI • Case studies were collected from Participants of Flood Affected districts in Karnataka and Web sites. • Documentation of past Disasters in 3 districts (Udupi, Karwar, Belgaum). • Inventory of Landslides in Karnataka prepared.
DISASTER PROFILE OF KARNATAKA Drought Vulnerability • Karnataka stands second only to Rajasthan in terms of total area under arid/semi-arid conditions • Low & medium rainfall regions which constitute more than 50% of the total areas, are vulnerable to periodical drought
Floods Vulnerability • Most Vulnerable Areas/Districts • Heavy discharges from Maharashtra causes floods in north Karnataka (Krishna & Godavari Basin) • Rainy Seasons • Bangalore • Hassam • Madikeri • Uttar Kannada • Other districts
Wind & Cyclone Hazards Total geographical Area of the state: 190.238 Lakh ha. Moderate Damage Risk Zone B: 44.92 Lakh ha. Vulnerable Areas - North & Coastal Districts (15 Districts, 50 Taluks)
Earthquake Hazards • Total geographical Area of the state = 190.238 Lakh ha. • As per the earthquake hazard mapping, the area falling in zone II & III • Earthquake Moderate Damage Risk Zone III (MSK VII)= 42.173 Lakh ha. (22.13 %) • Covering most of the coastal & north districts
Landslide Vulnerability • Western Ghats areas are prone to Landslides (Six districts - Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Shimoga, D.Kannada and U.Kannada). Landslide disaster in Konkan railway
Coastal Erosion Vulnerability • Karnataka has coastal line of 300 km which is prone to sea erosion during the monsoon. Coastal erosion near Mangalore
