How the Lady Bug saved the Bald Eagle A short tale about the ECOLOGY OF THE LADYBUG by JP Lang
Many years ago life on the farm was going very good. Farmers planted their crops and harvested them. They fed the crops to their livestock. There was plenty of food for all.
Then one year the farmer noticed that his crops were not growing very well. So he called his friend over to look at his crops.
The farmer’s friend told the farmer that aphids, a nasty insect, was eating his crops and that he should spray his fields with DDT to kill the aphids.
The farmer was told that DDT was safe. He looked in a magazine and found an advertisement that showed how helpful and safe DDT was, but the farmer was concerned.
The farmer was concerned, because since he started spraying DDT, he noticed that many birds were disappearing. The bird that was disappearing the most was the Bald Eagle.
It seems that the DDT was killing the Bald Eagles. It turns out that DDT was not as safe as people believed. So many Bald Eagles were killed that they almost disappeared.
The farmer did not know what to do. If he did not spray DDT the aphids would eat his crops and he would go hungry. If he sprayed his crops with DDT the Bald Eagles would vanish. The farmed needed another method to kill the Aphids.
Hearing of the farmer’s problem a teacher told the farmer that the answer to his problem was the Ladybug. The farmer thought the teacher was crazy.
The teacher explained that Ladybugs eat aphids and do not harm the environment. That the farmer could grow his crops and not harm the Bald Eagle and all he had to do was release the ladybugs. This is how the Ladybug saved the Bald eagle.
