Definition of Broadband • A high-speed Internet connection that operates at speeds greater than 128 kilobits per second. • Broadband service, such as a cable connection or DSL (digital subscriber line), allows users to download information, including multimedia applications, much faster than they can with dial-up modems.1 • High speed networking to support commonly used applications, such as • High quality, high resolution video, multimedia presentations, web casts or • Other communications that require transferring large amounts of data from one location to another.2 • Synchronous (real time) and asynchronous (on demand) • Interaction and collaboration across distances, • Enhancing access to professional development workshops, degree and certification programs, virtual tours, field trips, special events, etc.3
Existing Broadband Applications • Communication & Collaboration • Email Notifications & Web Access to Student Information • Parents and students can signup for automated email messages sent from grade book applications such as Edline, Pinnacle and PowerSchool. • Parents have access to student’s grades, attendance records, etc. • VoIP – Voice over IP allows schools to use broadband application for phone calls saving money • Video Conferencing – save time and travel money by conducting meetings using broadband video conferencing. • Web Cameras • Provides tool for collaboration between schools on educational projects • Provides parents access to classroom activities from home or work

Educational Broadband Application Plan for K-12 in Kalamazoo County • Provide Macromedia Breeze Broadband Application for all K-12 schools in Kalamazoo County through the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (KRESA) • Use Macromedia Breeze to conduct all KRESA training, professional development activities and meetings. • Provide Macromedia Breeze training to educators and administrators in K-12 schools. • Encourage school districts to develop plans to use Macromedia Breeze for professional development, distance learning projects, conducting meetings, collaborating on projects etc.
