Background • New Jersey State Library received an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) BTOP award in the Public Computing Center (PCC) category • Awarded $5.1 million grant from National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) • Awarded $1.5 million in matching funds from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation • Additional $150,000 from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support E-rate technical assistance
Project Scope • Professional development sessions for library staff • Basic Job Readiness Computer training courses for library customers • Access to online content and databases • Promotional materials from State Library’s Marketing department • Additional workstations at 124 libraries • Upgraded broadband connectivity at 79 libraries • E-rate consulting
Project Goals • Affordable pricing for high-speed internet access to libraries • Provide up to 938 new workstations to public libraries across the state • Serve up to an additional 22,500 computer users weekly • Offer training for as many as 12,800 residents • Provide online content and databases to the approximately 440,000 unemployed and underemployed NJ residents
Timeline • Project will run from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2013 • Community college trainings run until June 30, 2012 • Purchase and delivery of additional public workstations will take place from June 2011 through December 2011 • Broadband upgrades will take place by mid-2011 • Access to online databases will be available until June 30, 2013
Job & Career Accelerator w/Computer Skills Interactive online resource from Learning Express. Allows the user to: • Assess and explore careers and occupations • Create resumes and cover letters • Search for jobs & internships • Learn interviewing techniques • Interactive computer skills tutorials Currently available at all NJ public libraries and remotely using a NJ public library card through JerseyClicks.org Promotional materials available by request at www.surveymonkey.com/s/jcamarketing
Market Research Reports Provided by growth partnership company, Frost & Sullivan • Small businesses / library customers will access reports within NJ public libraries through JerseyClicks.org • Access to full reports will be delivered by East Brunswick Public Library
Workforce Learning Link Created in partnership with NJ Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development and NJN Public Television • Available at One-Stop Career centers and community based sites • Delivers workforce training programs and services to welfare registrants, dislocated workers, and other job seekers • Interactive training series that addresses individual employment-related issues
Community College Training Instructional courses, managed by NJ Community College Consortium, aimed at improving workforce skills Two components: • Professional development workshops for library staff • Basic Job Readiness Computer Training courses for library patrons
Professional Development workshops • 80 4-hour workshops for public library staff • Workshops are currently being scheduled • Content to be covered: • Conducting an online job search • Making use of NJ Department of Labor’s Real Time Jobs on Demand website • Locating other relevant commercial job web sites • Identifying most popular job search web sites • Learning key elements in an online job application
Basic Job Readiness Computer Training courses • 800 4-hour workforce focused courses in basic computer skills • Courses currently being scheduled • Content to be covered: • Windows • Internet • Word • E-mail
Marketing NJSL Marketing Department will provide: • Marketing kits containing • Posters • Bookmarks • Postcards • Statewide Marketing campaign: • NJ Transit bus signs • Banners on library buildings • Billboards • Skins on library vehicles • Google ads • Radio ads
E-Rate consulting Managed by E-Rate Central in New York • Workshops and a webinar will be available for all libraries • Tuesday, Feb 22nd 10:00AM – 12:00PM – Cumberland County Library • Thursday, Feb 24th 10:00AM – 12:00PM – Parsippany-Troy Hills Public Library • Monday, Feb. 28th 10:00AM – 12:00PM – Webinar • Assistance will be provided by E-Rate Central for those libraries interested in e-rate support
