Why use the Psat for Checkpoints? • All students take the PSAT in 10th and 11th • It’s valid, reliable and tested • College readiness component • Same skills as STAAR • Built into curriculum – know test format/skills • Pre-assess (key skills this year focused on vocabulary in context, author’s purpose, tone, comparing passages, editing) • Hallmark of differentiation – one size doesn’t fit all but at the same time all students should have access to the opportunity of instruction at high level
ELA Checkpoints – embed skills throughout the year, across all grades & levels
Labeling TEKS &PSAT Level – use the college board’s alignment to state standards as a starting point
Multiple Methods - Math • New standards • More than one way to answer as well as ask a question • Language of question • Rigor • Example of STAAR question vs. PSAT/SAT (concept or skill)
Math Examples – show specific examples to teachers first then have them share with students f(x) = x + 3 g(x) = x – 2 The functions f and g above are defined for all values of x. In the xy-plane, what is the y-coordinate of the point of intersection of the graphs of f and g? What is the x-coordinate of the solution to the system ?

Math Examples Michael has $7.35 made up of quarters and dimes. The number of dimes is 14 more than the number of quarters. Solve for w: 35 – w = 29 a. -6 b. 7 c. 5 d. 6 How do you solve this problem? As an equation? or Basic number sense by phrasing it to students as “35 minus what = 29)??
Using the data to make a difference • The mission given to our team was to go beyond looking at the scores. We had to ask… • “What observations can be made looking at this data? • Measure it • Have a conversation • Develop a plan

Streamline the access to information across content areas Once the SOAS are available click the tab titled “Test Questions” and save as a pdf. Next, don’t forget to include social studies, science, and foreign lang. department chairs in the discussions – request that they each have students answer 2-4 questions within the students’ practice test included in their free PSAT/NMSQT guide. Have all campus administrators & content area directors know exactly how these scores are calculated…(use Score Conversion Table) – for 10th & 11th definition of COLLEGE READY Use data file to identify students above composite as well as those who would be if they only answered 1 or 2 more questions correctly in each section.
