The Writing Process Five Steps to a Perfect Paper
What does the word PROCESS imply? There’s more than one step.
What does the word PROCESS imply? There’s more than one step. It’s not a rushed activity.
Step 1 - Prewriting Prewriting is the “worrying” process. You decide: 1. Subject (topic and purpose) 2. Target Reader (audience) 3. Thesis
Now that the “worrying” is over, you can relax…and go to the next step…
STEP 2 – Planning Why would these be stupid directions? READY, FIRE, AIM!
STEP 2 – Planning Just as ineffective is the thought process: READY, WRITE, PLAN!
STEP 2 – Planning Planning or Drafting consists of: • Organizing your thoughts • Writing an outline of your introduction, body and conclusion
Step 3 – Writing the First Draft If the outline is well done—this part is easy. Write the first draft of your essay… Here is an easy method to follow…
A. Think of the first draft as a work sheet. Relax. Nobody has to see it but you.
B. Use your outline as a general guide. It’s there to help you stay on track. But don’t be shackled by the wording you used in that outline. If something better occurs to you, use it.
C. Think Reader. What ideas, stories, or wording will appeal to that person?
D. Write FAST. Speed is your friend. Writing will be most natural if you keep reeling out the sentences rapidly. Don’t revise—ignore errors for now. Like “free writing.” Just keep going.
E. Use new ideas. While writing rapidly, you will often think of new examples, even whole new points. Put them in. You can rearrange them later.
Step 4 -- Revising • Look at your essay in a different way: • Let it sit and “marinate” a while before revising • Read it aloud • Have someone else read it to you • Have a friend/family member look at it. • Edit for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
Step 5 – Completing the Final Draft • You may have to revise/edit your paper several times before you are ready to present your work. • College teachers in history, religion, business, sociology, and so forth generally mark well-organized essays at least one letter grade higher for effort.
PART I What is a thesis… and how do I write a good one?
Thesis = essay topic+ the opinion or feeling your essay will prove to reader
In real life, you will. “But I don’t want to push my opinions on anyone else.”
Every thesis statement contains an opinion expressed in a signal term. The purpose of this paper is to discuss my pet goldfish.

Every thesis statement in a college paper should contain a signal term—and a preview. My goldfish is a wonderful pet, because he is kind, loving, and loyal.
Let’s pause here. Can you imagine some thesis statements and previews . . . about a musical instrument? about a particular sport? about a pet?
Summary: The thesis is anopinion that controls the essay. Thesis statement: The opinion your essay will prove, in one sentence. Signal term: The word that carries your opinion in the thesis statement. Preview: A quick list of the steps your paper will take in proving the thesis.
Your assignment next time will be to turn in two thesis statements including the previews
