John Steinbeck • John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. • John's Mom was a teacher. • John's Dad was a county treasurer. • Some of John’s favorite books were Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Le Morte d’Arthur. • While he wrote he took very odd jobs. • He was an apprentice hood-carrier, apprentice painter, etc.
1930’s • The Great Depression started on October 27th, 1929, and ended at the start of WW2. • The Dust Bowl started on January 1st, 1930 , and ended on December 31st, 1939. • The Empire State building opened on May 1st, 1931. • The Star Spangled Banner became the USA’s National Anthem on March 3rd,1931. • Bonnie and Clyde were a young couple on a crime spree.
The Great Depression • The Great Depression started on October 27th,1929. • The Great Depression ended at the begining of WW2. • The Great Depression was a time where a lot of people were poor or homeless. • In the Great Depression the stock market lost $30 billion more then they used in WW2. • 750,000 farmers declared bankruptcy. • WW2 ended the Great Depression.
Ranching • Most ranches in America are privately owned. • Ranches have lots of farm hands. • The people that own the ranches have to hire people to watch their cattle or sheep. • Ranches are large farms for breeding, and raising cattle and other animals. • Ranching is caring for horses, and other animals. • Ranching is very hard work.
The Care of Horses • Caring for horses is a very important thing if you live on a farm. • Horses are measured in hands, an adult palm or 4 inches. • To weigh a horse, you measure it then multiply by the circumference of the grith, and divide by 11. • Horses under the age of 6 months are known as foals. • Horses 2 years old are called yearling's. • A female horse under the age 4 is called a filly.
History of Salinas Salinas Valley • 'Salinas' is the Spanish word for 'salt marsh'. • "Salinas City" became the seat of Monterey County in 1872. • After WW1 the "Green Gold", lettuce, artichoke, etc. helped make Salinas one of the wealthiest cities in the U.S. • Salinas is about 4 miles in length. • Salinas is about 3 miles in width. • For Salinas, the 1930s were far less disruptive than many parts of America's farming economy. From 1932-1934, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went on a crime spree. • They are also known as Bonnie and Clyde. • They were a couple who went on a two-year crime rampage. • These are some of the things they included in their crime spree: bank robberies, car theft, and murder. • Their lives and their crime spree ended when police succeeded in ambushing them. • Bonnie and Clyde died in their car from multiple gunshot wounds on May 23, 1934.
