John Steinbeck • Born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas California. • Died December 20, 1968. • Received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. • Wrote a total of twenty-seven books. • These include The Grapes of wrath, East of Eden, and Of Mice and Men. • Lived in Monterey, California most of his life.

  3. History of Salinas • Originally settled by Indians know as Ensen. • There where lots of ranchos with mostly cattle. • Post office opened in 1854. • City named after the Spanish word for “salt marsh.” • President was Roosevelt.

  4. History of Salinas • Many new buildings were built the in thirties such as a new jail, armory, schools, and many others. • Very good land and produced many good crops. • Many smaller ranchos where there was mostly cattle.

  5. Ranching • People who owned ranches where called stock growers or ranchers. • Ranches partially owned by you and partly owned by someone else. • In the 1930’s dude ranch business was booming. • Dude ranches catered guests.

  6. The 1930’s • Great Depression. • Awful stock market crash and economic downfall. • Dust bowl. • Dust Bowl caused an enormous drought. • 1931 “Star Spangled Banner” became national anthem.

  7. The 1930’s • Taken up by some of World War II. • Also known as the “Dirty Thirties.” • California rodeo hosted many stars.

  8. The Care of Horses • Combed with a currycomb. • Need to have their hoofs picked to get out mud. • Normally fed grass, hay or grain. • Required to get vaccinations for sicknesses. • The middle of the is called a frog. • Make sure to keep the stall clean.

  9. Stetson Hats • Stetson hats were mostly manufactured by John B. Stetson Company. • Stetson hats also known as cowboy hats. • Stetson also produced dress hats and women’s hats. • One hat called “Boss of the plains” was very expensive.
