What is the Church? • The book of Isaiah on the current kingdom and current people of God with the future kingdom and people of God. • Church = people of God who have received the gift of God’s grace (1 Corinthians 1:1-2) • Church = kingdom of God (1 Thessalonians 2:12; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14; Ephesians 1:3-7; Colossians 1:13-14; Acts 2:38; 20:28 – Acts 5:11; see also Hebrews 12:22-28).
Identity of the Church • Name (Romans 16:16; 1 Corinthians 1:1-2) • One and only one (Ephesians 1:22 / 4:4) • One mind (Romans 15:5-6) • Problem with Corinthian church (1 Corinthians 1:10)

The Church has Ordained Work • Church’s objective – spiritual (John 18:36) • Evangelize the lost (1 Corinthians 1:21; 3:6-7) • Edify its members (Ephesians 4:11-16) • Benevolent care for needy saints (Acts 4:32; 6:1; 11:29; Romans 15:25-26; etc.)
Organization of Church • Elders / Bishops in every church (Acts 14:23) • Deacons (Acts 6:1ff; 1 Timothy 3:8-13) • Preachers / Evangelist (1 Corinthians 9:1-14) • Members (Romans 12:3-6; 1 Corinthians 12:12ff).
Worship of the Church • Lord’s Supper (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:23-24) • Singing (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16) • Praying (Acts 2:42; 1 Timothy 2:8) • Giving (1 Corinthians 16:2) • Gospel preaching (Acts 11:26; 20:7)
Conclusion • Isaiah’s future Zion • People called out of world by gospel • People who perform God’s ordained work • People who are organized as instructed • People who worship as instructed • Perfect people who are not always perfect yet strive to meet the Lord’s expectation – this is what sanctifies us from the world of sinners
