Principle # 1: Carefully • The Bible is the word of God and must be treated reverently. • It is not a novel, a self-help book, outdated historical reference, or a meaningless assignment. • The Bible was written by the creator of all things and it contains His thoughts. • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 • 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 • Therefore, we should treat it with great care and as a great treasure. • Joshua 1:8 • Psalm 19:7-11 Carefully
Principle # 2: Consistently • To be effective, the Bible must be read consistently. • Acts 17:11 • This hits at one of the most difficult problems for our society – time management. • Ephesians 5:6-17 • We must look at our allotted time here on earth as a series of opportunities. • Colossians 4:5 • This means that we must plan to study our Bibles every day. It is up to us to determine when and how, but it must be done if we expect to grow and mature in the Lord (2 Peter 3:18, Hebrews 5:11-14). Carefully Consistently
Principle # 3: Contextually • Consider the 5 W’s. • Who is doing the speaking and to whom? • What is he saying? • When did he say it? • Where did he say it? • Why did he say it? • Read repeatedly. • Nothing will help you more than reading the passage multiple times, even from different translations. You may even want to listen while you read. • Keep in mind the main point of the passage. Simplify the text if needed by looking at the main subjects and verbs. Carefully Consistently Contextually
Principle # 4: Conformance • Reading the Bible must be done for more than an academic study. When done properly, it will actually change the way we live. • Deuteronomy 29:29 • Luke 11:27-28 • Matthew 7:24-27 • James 1:22-25 • A daily reading of the scriptures will maintain our passion for God and help us to remain strong. (Psalm 1) • Reading the scriptures also provides for spiritual revivals, when read with an honest heart. (Nehemiah 8:1-8) Carefully Consistently Contextually Conformance
