  3. thermal production ? Rapp, Shuryak, PLB473, ‘00 open charm ? NA50 QM’99 Intermediate mass region A-A: NA60: D tagging • NA38/NA50:excess • ~3.5x for central

  4. Iron wall ~1m MWPC’s Muon filter Toroidal Magnet Target area ZDC Trigger Hodoscopes NA60 detectors • Muon Spectrometer • selective dimuon trigger • NA10/38/50 • Zero Degree Calorimeter • forward energy • Pixel Telescope • secondary vertices • improved mass resolution • Alice1 pixel chip • Beamscope • primary vertex, beam tracking • ultra rad hard • Lazarus effect

  5. Vertex Tracker - • Identification of D mesons (cc) • secondary  vertex • offset of ~100 m • secondary vertex: Pixel Telescope • primary vertex: Beamscope  tracking in the beam ! Vertex Telescope absorber Muon Spectro. Dm m offset D-vertex

  6. Requirements • Beam(SPS) • protons (450 GeV): ~108/s • ions (In, Pb, 160 GeV): ~107/s ? • 1. Ultra radiation hardness • ~6x1012 p/day, ~6x1011 i/day • dose ~1Grad/day ?calc? • should survive few weeks  tens of Grad • 2. Fast readout, history buffer • protons: 1 particle every 10 ns • delayed trigger • 3. Good position resolution • ~10 m to determine offset of ~100 m • 4. Small signal from protons • special preamplification necessary (close to the sensor)

  7. Sensor • single-sided silicon strip detector • n-substrate, p+ strips (Al/p+/n/n+/Al) • 300 m thickness • 24 small strips • 50 m pitch • ?20?m width • tracking • backplane • trigger • 4 +4 wide strips • 500 m pitch • ?20?m width • beam steering • guard ring
