  7. Human Capital • Human capital is defined as the skills acquired through a process of self investment. • Provides for the future: • Greater range of opportunities • Greater career success • What are some ways an individual can increase their human capital?

  8. How to Self-Invest • School • Get good grades • Take an Art elective class • Work • Work at local art gallery • Baby-sit and teach children how to paint • Extra-curricular activities • Art club • FCCLA

  9. Transferable Skills • Transferable skills are acquired through life experiences that can be used in an individual’s job or career. • Enhances an individual’s human capital • Examples: • Follow orders • Organization • Clear communication • Confidence • Cooperative problem solving • Creativity

Form a Plan • Choose a long-term career goal • Build human capital and develop transferable skills • School • Take elective classes that relate to the career • Work • Get a part-time job in that career field • Extra-curricular activities • Join activities that enhance the career potential • When is the best time to put the plan into action?

SMART Career Goals • S – specific • State the exact job, occupation or career you would like to obtain • M – measurable • Describe how you will be able to measure if the goal is achieved or not • A – attainable • Determine how the goal can be reached, which is often determined by education level and other experiences • R – realistic • Do not set the goal for something unattainable or unrealistic • T – time bound • State when you desire to reach the goal

Oliver’s Dilemma • Oliver is a freshman in high school and he is not sure what classes to take or what activities to get involved in. • He has many interests but really enjoys working with animals on his family’s farm. • Oliver loves reading books and has very good grades in school. • Oliver is not sure what he wants to do when he graduates from high school but is thinking about either being a veterinarian or a lawyer.
