Prince William County SchoolsProfessional Performance Process Revised PWCS Professional Educator Performance Standards February 23, 2012
Outcome Participants will review and discuss the alignment of the PPP Professional Educator Performance Standards with the Virginia Department of Education’s revised Guidelines for Uniform Performance Standards and Evaluation Criteria for Teachers.
Why the Revision? • The Virginia Department of Education has revised its Guidelines for Uniform Performance Standards and Evaluation Criteria for Teachers. • The Code of Virginia states that all Virginia school divisions must be consistent with the VDOE guidelines by July 1, 2012. • Good News – We are ahead of the game! • The PPP already includes much of what is outlined in the VDOE guidelines.
CROSSWALK ACTIVITY • With a partner compare our current Professional Educator Performance Standards with the first 6 standards and key elements of the revised standards document. • Note that the key elements that are not underlined have been taken from our current document and reorganized. • Note that the underlined key elements are from the VDOE document or from our current rubric. Questions: • What is your overall impression of these first 6 revised standards? • What happened in the reorganization of the standards and key elements?
What Happened in the Reorganization? • Our current Knowledge of Students and Knowledge of Content Standards are included in the new Standard 1: Professional Knowledge standard. • Our current Planning, Delivery, and Assessment of Instruction Standard has been pulled apart into 3 separate standards. • Our current Communication and Collaboration Standard is now embedded in the other standards. • Much of the language of our current standards have been subsumed in the standards and key elements of the revised document. • Our current Key Element 3 under Professionalism is now in the revised Professionalism Standard. • Most of the added language falls under the new Standard 4: Assessment of and for Student Learning.
Stakeholder Input Activity • Work at your table or in a small group to review one standard and its key elements. • Reread the key elements and write your input directly on the “Handout for Stakeholder Input” sheet. • Is there anything that… • does not belong where it is? • is redundant? • is unclear? • is missing? • Principals will compile your suggestions on language refinements and forward them to PPP Core Committee by March 16, 2012.
Performance Standard 7: Student Academic Progress • The work of the professional educator results in acceptable, measurable, and appropriate student academic progress. • Currently, with the PPP, you are accustomed to sharing data and evidence about your students’ academic progress throughout the year. • Describe what that looks like. • How do you know that your students are making academic progress in your class?
Performance Standard 7: Student Academic Progress • The work of the professional educator results in acceptable, measurable, and appropriate student academic progress. • Key Element 1: Sets acceptable, measurable, and appropriate achievement goals for student learning progress based on baseline data. • Key Element 2: Documents the progress of each student throughout the year. • Key Element 3: Provides evidence that achievement goals have been met, including the state-provided growth measure when available as well as other multiple measures of student growth. • Key Element 4: Uses available performance outcome data to continually document and communicate student academic progress and develop interim learning targets. • Review these key elements and make suggestions for language refinement on the sheet provided. • Your principal will compile suggestions and forward to PPP Core Committeeby March 16, 2012.
Next Steps in the Process • The March Articulation Meetings will focus on Standard 7: Student Academic Progress. • Principals will bring back the information and materials from these meetings to their schools. • Input will continue to be requested.
