  3. What is the Tundra Biome? • The tundra is the coldest biome of all the biomes. The Tundra only has two main seasons, winter & summer. The average winter temperature is -34° C. The average summer temperature is 3 to 12° C. The yearly precipitation ranges from 15 to 25 cm. The tundra is located North of the US, it is located near the North Pole.

  4. Polar Bear 1st Animal of the Tundra • Polar bears are very strong swimmers, they also have slightly webbed feet. • They have a thick coat that insulates them. Also they have a layer of fat to help keep them warm. • Their white colored fur helps them stay camouflaged in the white snow.

  5. Harlequin Duck 2nd Animal of the Tundra • They like cold fast moving streams. They can easily climb up steep and slippery rocks. • The ducks color is vey unique. It allows them to stay camouflaged in the waves of the river.

  6. Arctic Fox 3rd Animal of the Tundra • The Arctic Fox has padded feet to help prevent getting frost bitten when they dig in the ice. • It has a thick coat to keep the Arctic Fox warm. • They have a white coat to help them stay camouflaged in the white snow.

  7. Ermine 4th Animal of the Tundra In the summer their coat turns a chocolate brown. In the winter their fur turns white. The fur helps them to blend in with their surroundings. Ermines have 34 sharp teeth to help them eat their prey. Ermines are able to catch animals larger than themselves because of their sharp teeth.

  8. Snowy Owl 5th Animal of the Tundra Its light color helps it stay camouflaged in the snow. They have a heavy layer of feathers to keep it warm. They have sharp beaks to help eat and tear their prey.

  9. Pasque Flower 1st Plant of the Tundra It grows low to the ground to help keep protected from the wind. It likes sandy and gravely soils and also roadsides. This flower has fine silky hairs on it. These hairs help insulate it.

  10. Bearberry 2nd Plant of the Tundra The plant grows low to the ground to avoid wind. It has fine silky hairs that help keep warm. It also has leathery like leaves that help decrease evaporation.`

  11. Arctic Moss 3rd Plant of the Tundra This moss does not need soil to grow. This is good since it grows in the Tundra which has permafrost. It is able to store nutrients when its not growing, so new leaves can quickly grow. Because it can grow under water it is protected from the harsh winds and cold air.

  12. Diamond Leaf 4th Plant of the Tundra It grows close to the ground to keep warm. It’s a good source of nutrients for the animals of the Tundra. When they bloom, they have clusters of flowers that our white. They have a bumpy and fuzzy look to them.

  13. Arctic Willow 5th Plant of the Tundra It grows close to the ground t protect itself from the harmful wind. It has fuzz to help protect it from the cold. The fuzz also helps prevent loss of moisture.

  14. Lichen • 1st Organism of the Tundra • The dark pigments in them help them absorb heat. • They also can absorb moisture from the snow and ice.

  15. Mushrooms • 2nd Organism of the Tundra • They are able to decompose other dead plants. In other words, they take the nutrients from the dead plants. • Not much is known about how fungi survives in the Tundra
