  2. The concept of Shared Space • History • More traffic and more unsafe. • Stronger and weaker categories of road users. • More and more signs and lights and markings. • Separation of all categories. • Education and enforcement. • Adapting people to the system. CIVITAS Forum l19-21 October 2009 l Krakow (Poland) l Pieter de Haan

  3. Cities become car oriented Villages are split by roads andCommunities get divided by infrastructure. CIVITAS Forum l19-21 October 2009 l Krakow (Poland) l Pieter de Haan

  4. What do we want? Civility and Civilization. • Make people responsible in the public space instead of the road administration, the government. “Although Bnei-Brak residents commit three time more on-road violations than residents of other cities, it is not reflected by the injury statistics. … drivers are aware of the risky road habits of Bnei-Brak pedestrians.” CIVITAS Forum l19-21 October 2009 l Krakow (Poland) l Pieter de Haan

  5. Safe made situations lead to unsafe behaviour. So? Or so? CIVITAS Forum l19-21 October 2009 l Krakow (Poland) l Pieter de Haan

  6. The safer they feel, the more they dare? (The naked truth) CIVITAS Forum l19-21 October 2009 l Krakow (Poland) l Pieter de Haan

  7. Applied in the Public Space • Take out all those signs and markings that prevent people from communicate with each other and make them just rely on the regulations and their rights and obligations, not given by other road users, but by the road administration. • Make the situation less clear to understand in advance. Design so that speeds are harmonized and communication becomes possible. CIVITAS Forum l19-21 October 2009 l Krakow (Poland) l Pieter de Haan
