B. Battle of Shiloh Confederates attacked Grant in the early morning on April 6, 1862 The goal was control of the Mississippi River
The Battle lasted two days and was very bloody • It was a Union victory
C. The Fall of New Orleans Making his way down the Mississippi, Grant set his sights on New Orleans and control of the Mississippi
Admiral Farragut was in command of the attack from the sea • Once New Orleans was captured and the Union was able to use the Mississippi to reach Vicksburg
Located on a 200 foot cliff above the Mississippi It’s geography made it almost impossible to take by force
Grant’s troops began a siege in May 1863 • Food ran out, residents went hungry
Confederate Commander Pemberton surrendered in July • This loss sealed the fate of the Confederacy
Early in the War Confederates tried to control lands in the west and were stopped by the Union.
March 1862 Cherokee aided the Confederacy in the Battle of Pea Ridge • Cherokee were hoping the Confederacy would give them more freedom • Some Cherokee even owned slaves • Despite being outnumbered The Union Won
