  2. Ecoversity Programme • Institution wide programme • Built into Corporate objectives and plans • Aims to tackle 4 themes of sustainability: • Environment • Social – linking with community and wellbeing • Economic – linking with local business • Curriculum

  3. Structure of Ecoversity Programme • Task Groups pull together relevant and interested parties to focus on single issues • Overseen by the Action Group and Scrutiny Board • Feed into University Council and Senior Management Meetings

  4. How Can People Get involved in Ecoversity • Become members of the task groups • Set up local actions – fund available • Become an academic pioneer • For students 3 levels of involvement: intern, ambassador or volunteer

  5. Waste Task Group Actions • Full installation of recycling system now diverting around 70% waste from landfill • Managing 10% paper reduction project • Setting up formal mechanisms for re-using furniture and electronics in house and domestically

  6. Travel Task Group Actions • Helping initiate Free City Bus in Bradford • Setting up Sustainable Business Travel Framework • Incentivised Car Sharing and Network • Package of financial savings for non car drivers • Green Travel Awareness Weeks

  7. Energy and Carbon Group Actions • Verified utility data and setting up full management picture of utilities • Preparing for CRC Scheme • Installed Biomass Boiler saving 500 Tonnes CO2 annually • Carried out energy awareness activities • Took part in Earth Hour

  8. Food and Drink • Lug A Mug – discounts on re-usable mugs • Moved to make sandwiches on site • Rocket composter installed to deal with food waste • Negotiating catering contracts • Planning to install water fountains

Sustainable Purchasing Actions • Produced Green Buyers guide which now needs training of purchasing staff • Reviewed PQQ to include sustainability questions • Using National Procuring the Future flexible framework for measuring progress • Reviewing investment policy to look at ethics • Reduced deliveries from Office Depot to 3 per week

  10. Education for Sustainable Development • Established network of pioneers in each of schools • Every course now taught must include relevant sustainable development ideas and principles • 18 months into 5 year rolling programme to build sustainability into all courses

  11. Local Action Group • Been difficult to define • Local sustainability fund for staff and students to apply to for local action e.g. computer project • Trying to provide a network for different local actions

  12. Exercise • Split into Pairs / Threes • Take a card • Discuss the topic on the card • Think of around 3 ways you could make that process / function more sustainable • How would you implement these and make sure they happen

  13. What’s happened at in our Student Records? • Paper Reduction of around 40% -paperless re-enrolment, electronic comms with overseas students, less printed media • Improved webpages and self service options • Moving to electronic prospectus • Sunray computers and automatic light sensors

  14. Continued • Installing water coolers rather than bottles and discounts on coffee for reused mugs • Switching to reconditioned toner cartridges • Installing new system called Digitry which integrates student records functions with bank letters, council tax, CAS and other functions • Have had to try and wean employers off paper statements of results
