Leadership The Essence of Organizational Growth
Three Essential Elements of Leadership • Managing the Present • Nurturing the Identity of the Organization • Creating the Future
Managing the Present • Discuss at your table what it means to “manage the present” • Why is it important to manage the present?
Nurturing the Identity of the Organization • What is the identity of your district? • Your school? • Billboard Activity: • Using a sheet of flipchart paper and markers, design a billboard that represents the identity of your district • 4-8 words • Feel free to add pictures/symbols/graphics/color • Be prepared to share with the group
Identity: You Can’t NurtureWhat You Don’t Know • How do we nurture the identity of the organization? • What is our identity (credo)? • Some examples: • Midwest Express: “The Best Care in the Air” • Allstate Insurance: “The Good Hands People” • John Deere Tractors: “Nothing Runs Like a Deere”
Creating the Future • Based on the district goals, your personal identified growth areas, and the billboard activity, as a team, what steps do you need to create the future of Juneau Public Schools?
Revisiting Your Growth Areas • Based on our leadership activities, take a second look at your leadership growth areas for this year. • Is there anything you want to change/add/delete? • Share with your peers
What is the TLQ? • A diagnostic 360-feedback process to support leadership & personal development. • It assesses the manner in which leadership behaviours are displayed – the how of leadership.
What is the TLQ? TLQ Scales
(1) Leading Others • Showing Genuine Concern • Enabling • Being Accessible • Encouraging Change
(2) Personal Qualities • Being Honest & Consistent • Acting with Integrity • Being Decisive • Inspiring Others • Resolving Complex Problems
(3) Leading the Organization • Networking & Achieving • Focusing Effort • Building Shared Vision • Supporting a Developmental Culture • Facilitating Change Sensitively
‘Who do I choose to rate me?’ • Boss – line manager or above if appropriate • Peer – colleagues, fellow team members • Direct Report – persons that you are directly responsible for • Internal Other – individuals with whom you do not work directly • External Other – individuals in other organizations / agencies with whom you work
Selecting ‘Raters’ • Who can best assess what is required of you in your current job? • Who is most likely to give you honest and frank feedback? • Choose a varied source of people (including people from outside of your organization, if appropriate) • Choose someone reliable, and who you know will complete the assessment for you
Briefing ‘Raters’ • Take time to explain to raters why you are asking them to do this for you and how important their contribution is • Relieve any anxieties about confidentiality • Explain that the raters can use ‘Don’t know’ or ‘Not relevant’ where appropriate
Reflecting on the TLQ • Random group walk-about • In groups of 3s, formulate questions/comments relating to the TLQ
Debrief TLQ • Based on your walk-about, we will debrief on your comments and questions
On-Going Collaboration • Follow up to the leadership instrument • Individual and group follow up • Design of individual growth plan linking to district and PAR components • Ongoing dialogue for continuous growth and development • Wiki (on going) • Webinars (monthly) • In person (quarterly)
Next Steps • Where do we go from here? • Here’s what we did today: • Linked district goals, PAR, and leadership • Identified overlapping issues • Identified top priorities for individuals and the district • Identified individual growth areas for leadership • Examined three leadership elements • Examined and discussed questions on the TLQ
Next Steps • Individually, identify next steps in the areas we covered today: • What do you believe needs to happen over the next year in those areas? • Share your ideas with those at your table and generate a list of common ideas • Report to the group
