Adding and subtracting in Reception ELG: Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. ELG: Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. • Children should be confident in the following in order to achieve these Early Learning Goals: • Counting to 20 forwards and backwards in the correct order. • Ordering numbers to 20. • Understanding one more and one less than a given number. • Understanding the quantity of each number- numicon, multi-link cubes etc. • Count objects correctly- saying one number for each object they count.
Practical activities Practical resources used: NumiconCounting objects Multi-link cubesTens Frames Counters
Doubling, halving and sharing in Reception ELG: They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing. • Children should be confident in the following in order to achieve this Early Learning Goal: • One to one correspondence. • Familiar with some number bonds. • An understanding of the concept of quantity – e.g. the “fiveness” of five. • Understanding that adding means more and taking away means less.
Maths Home Learning • Daily input numbers sent home weekly- • Please use these at home with children to work on: • Number recognition • Number formation • Counting objects and matching them to the correct number
Maths activities at home • Children can play lots of games at home in everyday contexts which can reinforce their understanding of number: • Number songs- 5 Little Ducks, 10 green bottles, 10 in the bed, etc • Counting how many spoons will be needed when setting the table • Talking about money when shopping (e.g. paying for something that costs 20p) • Looking at numbers in the environment (e.g. on the bus, door numbers, reading general signs, etc) • Games- skipping, beat the goalie, hopscotch etc • Writing numbers in the sand, bubbly water, using chalk, etc • Children can record some of this home learning in their WOW books to share with their class- e.g. pictures, drawings, number writing, etc
