  3. Parts of a Map • Key/Legend: explains the symbols & colors on the map Compass: tells direction • Title: tells the type of map & location • Scale: tells distance between two places in real life

  4. Physical Maps • Physical Maps tell you what the land looks like; shows physicalfeatures • Colors show land elevation & ocean depth.

  5. Political Maps • Political maps show boundaries of countries, states, & cities. • Colors show man-made things.

  6. Thematic Maps • Thematic maps are used on a theme or idea. Examples: population, environment, resources, etc. • Does not show physical features or political boundaries.
